É verdade o Ubuntu 7.10 saiu com problemas que poderá se considerar grave para quem é novo com o Linux.
Abri este tópico, para relatarmos todos os problemas que conhecemos desta versão e as suas soluções.

Para já detectei 3 falhas:
Ubuntu foi lançado com um bug em um dos drivers de vídeo para as placas Intel presentes em quase 80% dos notebooks vendidos hoje em dia :s

O que acontece é bem simples, as barras laterais das janelas ficam mal formadas e instáveis, um problema já conhecido por quem tentou instalar o compiz há um ano atrás.
O problema encontra-se no driver, portanto é preciso alterar o Xorg depois de instalar (não sei ao certo o que temos de alterar), na instalação para parar a instabilidade é preciso ir ás aparências e desactivar os efeitos 3D.
Também relataram que o tipo de letra no arranque (para escrever o user e a pass) está demasiadamente grande. O motivo é o mesmo, drivers das placas intel.

Outro problema é que em algumas placas, ele arranca com os drivers genéricos (vesa) o que cria um ecrã 800*600 e não nos permite ver completamente as janelas de instalação, caso isso aconteça pressionam o alt+botão esquerdo do rato para mover a janela, depois de instalado, é activar os drivers restritos e tudo deverá funcionar bem.

Em alguns casos de actualizações do 7.04 para o 7.10 pelo gestor de actualizações, aconteceu que o eth0 ficou mal configurado e conseguia efectuar pings mas não aceder á net. Pelo que investiguei é necessário ir ao about:config no firefox e activar o IPv6.

Existe mais uns relatos de erros, que não consegui determinar ao certo se a causa era do hardware ou da distribuição em si, por isso prefiro não relatar.

Ubunta é o programa que configura o Ubuntu automaticamente e instala os programas e codecs mais usuais, uma ferramenta excelente para o novato no Ubuntu e para quem tem presa em configurar o Ubuntu no seu pc.

Com informações do que é uma distribuição entre outras coisas do opensource até as suas influencias a nível económico.

Sem duvida que este é o local ideal para mergulhar no mundo do opensource, nomeadamente com o Ubunta, para quem deseja ter um pc funcional sem perder tempo a ler guias, só o necessário para arrancar. Mais vale usar um sistema e depois compreende-lo, do que tentar compreender um sistema para conseguir usá-lo.

Esta nova versão 2.2 do Ubunta está mais poderosa, com possibilidade de retomar caso tenha sido interrompida, capacidade de instalar programas extras mais tarde depois de a já ter executado, bastando para isso executá-la de novo.

* Compiz Fusion, the compositing window manager that re-merges Compiz and Beryl, is installed by default. To enable Compiz Fusion in GNOME, use the System/ Preferences/ Desktop Effects tool. Ongoing, long term Xorg work continues to enable Compiz by default.
* The completely free and open source Java environment called IcedTea is installed by default. IcedTea is derived from OpenJDK, includes a browser plugin based on GCJ, and is available for both x86 and x86_64 architectures. GCJ is still the default on PPC architecture.
* OpenOffice.org 2.3, with many new features, is available as part of Fedora 8.

* Secure remote management capability is now provided for Xen, KVM, and QEMU in Fedora 8 virtualization.
* Eclipse 3.3 (Europa), a new release of the acclaimed development platform, is available as part of this release.
* In this release, the performance of yum, Pirut, and Pup have been significantly improved.
* The Add/Remove Programs tool, pirut, introduces a new graphical interface for managing software repositories. Use Edit → Repositories to enable/disable any of the installed software repositories.
* Live installations are faster and require a smaller root filesystem. The file system layout has also changed somewhat. System files for the Live images are now under LiveOS/, and a new README file has been provided as a short introduction to the live image.
* Transifex provides a web-based translation interface to allow users to contribute translation work for Fedora hosted projects as well as being able to provide translations to upstream directly to any upstream project.
* Integration of unique build IDs into Fedora’s software building infrastructure now provides enhanced debugging capabilities and core dumps.
* Fedora now offers easier rebranding of Fedora derivatives via a generic-logos software package. Changes in Fedora’s mirror structure also make creation of derivatives easier.
* The pam_console module usage has been removed in favor of access control via HAL, which modernizes the desktop.
* Fedora 8 features a 2.6.23 based kernel.
